1926 AJS 350CC SIDEVALVE FLAT TANK.

Here is a good old AJS 350cc side-valve in running order but unfortunately in need of attention to gearbox.

The bike is believed to be a 1926 G6 (big port) frame but fitted with the sidevalve 350cc G5 engine.

It has been a well used machine and is in generally very sound all round useable condition.

It starts easily and sounds great mechanically, ticks over nicely. A reassuring puff of smoke can be easily obtained using the manual oil pump which is working well.

I have ridden the bike as it is (short distances). It’s fine in 1st gear but not really possible to get by in 2nd or 3rd. The gearbox will need to be rebuilt. Clutch is good. Decomp lever is working OK.

Brakes are good especially the rear one.

The bike comes with an up to date V5C, registered as a Historic Vehicle.

Frame number is 83826 (which correlates to a 1926 G6 “Big Port” according to Andrew Mills’ excellent book on AJS.)

Engine number is 57520, which according to the same book is a 1926 G5 engine (350cc sidevalve).

These numbers appear to be original factory stampings and they match the V5C

Date of registration is given as 1980 in the V5c and it is declared manufactured 1925 (which could be correct for a 1926 model).

Cosmetically the bike is in typical well patinated vintage unrestored condition. It is not at all pretty (in the shiny sense) but the paint-work is kind of sound and practical. The wheel rims and spokes have relatively good paintwork. Tyres front and rear are Dunlop beaded edge type, unworn but obviously old. (Only light perishing showing though)

Tank is sound but does appear to have been linered with a modern liner which looks good.

There is no fin damage on the cylinder area but there are a few minor chipped fins on the head which aren’t really that noticeable unless you inspect closely.

Rear stand is in good order.

Exhaust system is sound.

Saddle is sound and practical.

All in all this is a great opportunity to own a lovely well patinated little 350 side-valve AJS from the glory years of Wolverhampton. Only real bug-bare is the gearbox which is simple to work on. With that sorted you would have an ideal vintage flat tanker to join in Banbury and other such pre 31 events.

Don’t miss this potentially delightful little Ajay.
