1957 Matchless G80CS 500cc £5500

 1957 Matchless G80CS 500cc

This is a very rare opportunity to acquire one of the best all round British bikes.

The competition Matchlesses were well renowned for strength, speed and reliability. They were successful scramblers of their day, but for some unknown reason AMC did not push them in road going trim and for this reason they are very hard to come by these days.

In my opinion these scramblers make excellent all round road going machines. Similar in performance to BSA Goldstars but a lot more comfortable to ride!

Starting is OK but does require a manly boot! The engine sounds very good and runs clean of smoke and has not untoward noises.

The dynamo is charging well and the lights are good. The Smith's speedometer is working well.

The AMC gearbox and clutch are excellent but I would suggest gearing up slightly for longer distance road use.

Brakes are good, handling is excellent. It's a good combination to have the genuine, strong single downtube competition frame and this 33bhp engine. Its light and manageable as well as looking the part! The competition short-stroke all alloy engine is a completely different animal to the familiar road going singles. The crank is forged not cast and the crankpin is a much larger design. The top end is held down with 3/8" through studs. These are very tough engines!

This bike has a V5C registration document registration number 722 XUP (cannot be transferred to another vehicle)

Frame number is 7589C Engine number is 57/G80 2854Cs. These are genuine competition engine & frame numbers.

There is an MOT until December 15th 2009 and historic class (free) tax disc valid until 31-12-09.

Cosmetically the bike is average. The tank and oil tank have been recently repainted to a good standard, but the paint on the frame is generaly old looking. The wheel rims are silver painted not chrome. It is basically an unrestored bike, in decent running order ready to ride or improve.

Don't miss this genuine short-stroke competition scrambler!
